The access points in the ceiling are a few years old, the vendor is talking about a new generation, and the question is whether the office should move to Wi-Fi 6, wait for Wi-Fi 7, or leave well alone. The labels are marketing shorthand for real engineering changes, and each generation changes something different about how a busy office network behaves. Here is what each one actually does, and how to decide.
Wi-Fi 6: better behaviour in a crowd
Wi-Fi 6, the friendly name for the 802.11ax standard, was designed less for headline speed and more for offices, classrooms and lobbies where dozens of devices share one access point. Its central change is OFDMA, orthogonal frequency division multiple access, which lets an access point split a channel into small slices and serve several devices in the same transmission instead of making them queue one at a time. Alongside it came better multi-user antenna handling, a colouring scheme that helps neighbouring access points ignore each other’s traffic, and target wake time, which lets battery devices agree a schedule and sleep in between.
The practical result is that a Wi-Fi 6 network under load feels calmer: video calls hold up when the room fills, and phones stop fighting laptops for airtime. It still uses the familiar 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands, so it works with the same cabling and the same access point locations, and it remains the sensible baseline for most offices today.
Wi-Fi 6E: the same rules, a new band
Wi-Fi 6E is Wi-Fi 6 extended into the 6 GHz band, which regulators including Canada’s have opened for low-power indoor use. The band is the largest block of new spectrum Wi-Fi has ever received, and it is clean: no legacy devices, no microwave ovens, no neighbours’ old routers. That allows wide channels and low interference, which is where the very fast, very low latency numbers come from.
The trade-offs are physical. Higher frequencies do not travel as far or pass through walls as well, so an access point layout designed for 5 GHz may leave gaps at 6 GHz, and a denser layout costs more cabling and hardware. Only devices built for 6E can use the band, and older laptops and phones simply fall back to 5 GHz on the same access point. For most offices, 6E is a worthwhile step when the access points are being replaced anyway rather than a reason to replace working ones early.
Wi-Fi 7: wider channels and multiple links
Wi-Fi 7, based on the 802.11be standard, keeps the 6 GHz band and pushes further. Channels can be twice as wide as before, up to 320 MHz, and denser modulation packs more data into each transmission when the signal is strong. The change that matters most for a business is multi-link operation: a device can talk to the access point across two bands at once, using whichever is clearer at that instant, which reduces the stalls that video calls and cloud applications notice.
The honest caveat is that many of those gains only appear when the client device also supports Wi-Fi 7, and the installed base of laptops, phones, printers and conference room hardware takes years to turn over. Wi-Fi 7 access points are fully backward compatible, so buying them today is a way of future-proofing rather than an instant transformation.
Cabling, power and placement
The generation you choose reaches down into the ceiling and the telecom room. Newer access points ship with 2.5 gigabit or faster uplinks because a single unit can now carry more than a gigabit of client traffic, so the switch port and the cable behind it need to keep up. Cat6 carries 2.5 gigabit over the standard channel; Cat6a is the safer choice on new runs. Higher-end access points also draw more power, and a switch specified for the previous generation may not have the PoE budget for a full complement of new units. Placement deserves a fresh look at every generation. A layout that gave good 5 GHz coverage in a drywall office may need extra units for 6 GHz, and dense spaces such as training rooms and open plan floors benefit from more, lower-power access points rather than a few loud ones. Common questions
Should a business upgrade to Wi-Fi 6E or Wi-Fi 7 now?
If the current access points are Wi-Fi 5 or older, or the office suffers under load, moving to Wi-Fi 6 or 6E now is worthwhile. If the access points are already Wi-Fi 6 and performing well, there is little urgency; plan for Wi-Fi 7 at the normal refresh point. When you do buy, choose the newest generation your budget allows, because access points typically stay in the ceiling for five years or more.
Will old laptops and phones work on a Wi-Fi 7 network?
Yes. Every generation is backward compatible, so a Wi-Fi 5 laptop connects to a Wi-Fi 7 access point and simply uses the features it understands. It will not get the new speeds or the 6 GHz band, and a large number of legacy devices will hold back the overall efficiency of the network somewhat, but nothing stops working. Device turnover, not the access points, decides when the new capabilities are felt.
Does Wi-Fi 6E need new cabling?
Often not, but check two things. The uplink on new access points is usually 2.5 gigabit, which Cat6 supports over the standard channel; older Cat5e runs may need testing or replacement. Second, 6 GHz coverage may call for a few extra access point locations, and those need new cable drops. Confirm the switch’s PoE budget too, since newer access points draw more power than the units they replace.
How many access points does an office need?
Fewer than the fear and more than the hope. It depends on floor area, wall construction, how many people work in each zone, and what they do; a call centre needs a denser layout than an archive room.
